Venture capital investments plunged last year

Investment by venture capital firms declined last year to its lowest point in more than a decade, according to a report scheduled to be released Friday.

There were 2,795 investments worth $17.7 billion in 2009, a 37 percent decline in dollar value compared with 2008, according to the report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, which analyzed data provided by Thomson Reuters. The Washington area had 117 deals totaling about $540 million for 2009, compared with $985 million the previous year. That level of investment put Washington in the middle of the pack nationally, based on the report's accounting, which divides the country into 19 regions. Mark Esposito, director of the emerging company services group at PricewaterhouseCooper, said the findings show that the amount of venture capital investment increased as the year went on. In a call with reporters on Thursday, PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Danny Wallace said 2009 marked the first year that nationally, the biotech industry nudged past the software industry to grab a larger chunk of investment capital.

Mr. Ingram and others say they are mindful that a prolonged or severe market downturn could change the landscape for IPOs this year.

But even in good market environments, most venture-backed companies prefer to sell outright to a buyer than to go public, says Dan Nova, a general partner at venture-capital firm Highland Capital Partners.

"I think acquisition activity will be at least, if not more, active than the IPO market" for venture capital-backed firms, says Mr. Nova, who believes between 30 and 50 venture-backed IPOs could debut this year.

Hills is not alone among mass merchants in taking this course. Regional chains such as Bradlees and Pamida already have a track record; Pamida broke out a juniors departments one year ago, and Bradlees made a similar move for the current season.
Bradlees had experimented with juniors departments previously, but went back to the traditional discount mode--incorporating juniors looks into the misses assortment--in recent years. "Our fashion-forward goods have been mixed in with, or directly adjacent to, the misses goods," says Celia Clancy, senior vice president, general merchandise manager for womenswear, who this year decided that the two classifications of product needed separate in-store merchandising to deliver a clear message to the shopper.

Now, by trying trend looks together, Bradlees is seeking to broadcast newness to the juniors customer. The chain's juniors business was planned separately from the misses buy for fall 1996, and separate departments have reappeared.

Howard Jacobs, president of Zanadi, a fashion-forward denim manufacturer believes the timing is auspicious. "Juniors is coming back with gusto. After a very rough two or three years, this Back-to-School is the best."

"Juniors has been a separate entity here for about a year. Business is very, very strong," confirms Woody Cozart, vice president, divisional merchandise manager at Pamida.

Venture plans dollar stores - Venture Stores Inc. to launch Venture Dollar chain in December 1996

O'FALLON, MO. -- Point of view is everything. Some would say that Venture's plans to operate a separate chain of Venture Dollar stores is evidence of lost focus on the core business--or of desperation. Others attest that the move is proof of the staying power of this 26-year-old chain.

Venture Dollar is a test. It is too small at its germination to distract management from the core chain, but distinct enough for consumers to keep the two concepts apart. Venture Dollar is a low-cost, potentially high-margin, opportunistic tactic that reflects a fundamental strategy.
Chairman, president and ceo Bob Wildrick has long maintained that Venture would investigate and test new formats and tweak its mix to "leverage its resources." He has referred to the chain's new and modernized distribution centers as a "secret weapon."

With venture's comp store sales down 20% in the wake of its dramatic remerchandising one year ago, that secret weapon obviously has underutilized capacity. Venture has a DC in each major trading area: Chicago, St. Louis and the Texas DC near Dallas.

These will supply the nine Venture Dollar stores the chain will open during the first half of December in a variety of urban and rural markets. While Venture would not release the exact locations, senior vp, marketing Cliff Campeau told DSN that there will be three Venture Dollar stores supplied by each DC.

Carrying 2,500 to 3,000 skus of fast-turning, lower-priced, convenience-oriented items, the stores will range in footprint from 7,000 sq. ft. to 10,000 sq. ft. By comparison, the average Venture discount store handles about 70,000 skus in a little more than 100,000 sq. ft. of space.
